EPS High Energy Particle Physics Prizes

The High Energy and Particle Physics Prize, for an outstanding contribution to High Energy Physics in an experimental, theoretical or technological area, will be awarded to one or more persons or to collaboration(s).

The Giuseppe and Vanna Cocconi Prize, for an outstanding contribution to Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology in the last fifteen years, in an experimental, theoretical or technological area, will be awarded to one or more individuals or to one or more collaborations.

The Young Experimental Physicist Prize, for outstanding work by one or more early career experimental physicist (maximum of 8 years - excluding career interruptions - of research experience following the PhD) in the field of Particle Physics and/or Particle Astrophysics.

The Gribov Medal, for outstanding work by an early career researcher (maximum of 8 years - excluding career interruptions - of research experience following the PhD) in Theoretical Particle Physics and/or Field Theory.

The Outreach Prize, for outstanding achievement in outreach, including education and the promotion of diversity, in connection with High Energy Physics and/or Particle Astrophysics.

Prizes are awarded in a ceremony during the International Europhysics Conference on HEPP taking place every two years. More detailed regulations and the list of previous prize winners may be consulted below:

Recipients of the 2023 HEPP Division Prizes

The High Energy and Particle Physics Division of the EPS is proud to announce the 2023 EPS HEPP prizes. Awards will be presented at the EPS Conference on High Energy Physics taking place in Hamburg 21-25 August 2023.

The 2023 EPS High Energy and Particle Physics Prize is awarded to Cecilia Jarlskog for the discovery of an invariant measure of CP violation in both quark and lepton sectors; and to the members of the Daya Bay and RENO collaborations for the observation of short-baseline reactor electron-antineutrino disappearance, providing the first determination of the neutrino mixing angle Θ13, which paves the way for the detection of CP violation in the lepton sector.

The 2023 Giuseppe and Vanna Cocconi Prize is awarded to the SDSS/BOSS/eBOSS collaborations for their outstanding contributions to observational cosmology, including the development of the baryon acoustic oscillation measurement into a prime cosmological tool, using it to robustly probe the history of the expansion rate of the Universe back to 1/5th of its age providing crucial information on dark energy, the Hubble constant, and neutrino masses.

The 2023 Gribov Medal is awarded to Netta Engelhardt for her groundbreaking contributions to the understanding of quantum information in gravity and black hole physics.

The 2023 Young Experimental Physicist Prize of the High Energy and Particle Physics Division of the EPS is awarded to Valentina M. M. Cairo for her outstanding contributions to the ATLAS experiment: from the construction of the inner tracker, to the development of novel track and vertex reconstruction algorithms and to the searches for di-Higgs boson production.

The 2023 Outreach Prize of the High Energy and Particle Physics Division of the EPS is awarded to Jácome (Jay) Armas for his outstanding combination of activities on science communication, most notably for the 'Science & Cocktails' event series, revolving around science lectures which incorporate elements of the nightlife such as music/art performances and cocktail craftsmanship and reaching out to hundreds of thousands in five different cities world-wide.
